Job Description

Identification of at-risk learners  

  • Conduct pre-school screenings through discussions with educators and working with learners to identify risks.
  • Conduct scholastic testing to screen learners for primary school readiness.
  • Make use of relevant reading tests (wadding reading and spelling, word chains etc.) to assess readiness and scholastic level of learners.
  • Assess learners actual work produced to assess level.

 

Recommendations and referrals 

  • Meet with educators and provide feedback.
  • Discuss learner needs and requirements.
  • Compile summary report of findings and recommendations.
  • Meet with parents, go through findings and discuss recommendations at different levels with educators and at home.
  • Make referrals to appropriate therapists or to the multidisciplinary disciplinary team.
  • Compilation of individual development and intervention programmes for learners.

 

Monitoring of progress of learners             

  • Follow up with various professionals to ensure that the learner is attending.
  • Provide feedback to educators in limits of confidentiality.
  • Assess progress and arrange follow ups to establish progress.
  • Round table discussions relating to learners to determine how therapy is going, progress, discuss next steps etc.

 

Training and education of providers (Internal) and parents     

  • Provide support and training sessions/ arrange for speakers for educators and therapists on the management of special requirements.
  • Conduct/arrange information sessions on various topics on how to identify types of behaviour or indicators of issues with learners.
Key Skills / Requirements
  • BEd and/or PGCE in intermediate phase teaching
  • Experience as a remedial teacher/coordinator
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as an intermediate phase teacher  
  • Knowledge of the CAPS curriculum
  • Proven facilitation, problem-solving and report-writing skills  
  • Excellent communication, organisational and planning skills
  • Willing and able to work extended hours
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • SACE-registered
  • Clear criminal record
